WORLD'S OLDEST AND THRIVING FOOD MARKET

After stumbling around for quite some time with my head stuck tightly into Google maps, I managed to find way through the streets of London to this gorgeous market. The location took me by surprise as I'd never visited this place before and found it funny it was right next to the shard and not a far walk from Tower bridge. Both good places to visit as well on a trip around these parts. The food bags I kept seeing encouraged me that I was on the right path though! Especially the ones from Bread Ahead Bakery, I could imagine the smell for quite some time, since I had been checking out their tasty instagram reels.

Before I made my way down into the Borough market, I stopped on a little bridged walkway just above the entrance to grab my camera from my bag, and was stopped mid bend and snap by the elevated view down into the market.

"Many vendors brought delicacies from the surrounding countryside into the city such as Italian ices or strawberries that they sold from pushcarts.[6] By the early 19th century, vendors were selling warm eels, pickled whelks, oysters and fried fish with hot peas." - Chasing London Street Food

As I walked around through multiple alley ways and busy footpaths, I saw such a wide variety of things on sale. From oysters being shucked on the spot and served on platters, to a massive pot of paella bubbling away next door, the flavours from both dancing on the air while I stood between both, weighing up my choices for that days lunch. In the end I went for an Argentinian steak sandwich with all the trimmings seen above, which as you can see was heavenly. I also got some great sourdough and an out of this world creme brulee filled and sugar scorched doughnut from Bread Ahead Bakery.

Don't miss out on the actual market branded store! There's lots of great books and nice bags to buy to put all your foodie finds of the day into to carry home. Or you get a cute little historic fork tote to stash it all away in on my web store here. Besides the things to eat, there were lots of lovely charity stalls making donations to various organisations, then a few stalls with really good ecological focuses. If you want to bring your empties here for a refill for the laundry or find locally sourced ingredients for authentic Italian food, you can do both here! Who would have imagined?

"The history of Borough Market stretches back over 1,000 years when merchants first started trading grain, fish, vegetables and livestock here near the riverside." - Londonperfect.com

It was funny to hear the football chanting on the way out of the market, like an end of lunchtie school bell, it rang loud, while being led out and around the place by the police. Always something happening in London.

Happy historical eating! T x
