While on a family vacation to celebrate my fathers birthday, I had a quick google to see where we could go for a good fish and chip lunch. To my surprise, The Brazen Head popped up! One of Irelands oldest pubs, completely out of the blue and utterly timely, so naturally we had to check it out. I was not disappointed upon seeing its castle like building from across the road. Walking through the small walkway into the courtyard felt like strolling back in time, with a knight to greet us and a smell of summer and good food in the air. A kind waiter seated us in the front room closest to the courtyard entrance, a good choice to catch all the action of the football match unfolding. After a trip to the Guinness factory, we had some more with our meal and took the place in. I made the rounds and got sucked into all the adverts and newspaper clippings framed on the walls on the multiple levels of this pub.
The Irish name for Dublin is Baile Atha Cliath – (pronounced: Ball-ya-Awha-Clia) which means “The Town of the Ford of the Reed Hurdles”. - The Brazen Head
If live music is your thing, you'll also be in for a treat, here or any other bar in Dublin to be honest! While we didn't manage some here, I've heard reports that it's awesome. From what we heard at both the temple bar and the 360 Guinness bar at the factory, I have full faith it would make a nice date night, or good family evening entertainment.
The fact that this pub also used to be a coaching inn reminded me of The George Inn in London. I wish I could go back and visit here to stay in one of the rooms. I couldn't make it so far around the place inside to see everything this time, however that only means more mysteries lie in wait of another visit.
The present building was built in 1754 as a coaching inn. However The Brazen Head appears in documents as far back as 1653. An advertisement from the 1750’s reads “Christopher Quinn of The Brazen Head in Bridge Street has fitted said house with neat accommodations and commodious cellars for said business”. - The Brazen Head
Give this a place an afternoon or evening visit if you're ever in Dublin, and enjoy the happiness of the locals and soak up the history found at every corner.
Happy historical sipping! T x
